#SMWNYC

STORIES: With Great Influence Comes Great Responsibility. Ultimately, stories have the power to influence the world and the people who consume them, and with this influence comes responsibility.

www.MelanieRijkers.com on Social Media Week New York City

1. Stories: Social media has become the world’s most influential storytelling platform. The stories we tell have the ability to touch and inspire, and shake people to their cores. They can elevate people, educate them, and change them—or, they can divide us and tear us down.

The number of social media users worldwide in 2018 is 3.2 billion, up 13 percent year-on-year. By 2020 almost 5 billion people will be connected. Social Media Week (SMW) is one of the world’s premier conferences and industry news platforms for professionals in media, marketing and technology.

2. Vulnerability. Brands now must encourage vulnerability, not to isolate consumers, but to celebrate their differences — engaging focused communities, sharing insightful, relevant content, and allowing passionate people to connect with one another.
What's your P.O.V? (Power of Vulnerability)

Tips taken from the session with Amy Emmerich/Refinery29: To Service – not sell – to your audience. Keywords: Celebrate, Strenght, Connection, Joy. What is the solution you offer to your customer's problem? Claim your Power, the Power of Vulnerability.

3. Connection. Vulnerability: how true connection is formed. Brands: use connection over perfection. Many speakers mentioned connection, but Lola Banjo explains it perfectly, fear is the emotion that prevents true vulnerability.

Vulnerability: how true connection is formed

Lola - I froze my eggs - Banjo: The Fear of Being judged, Lola talked about Not being relevant, Losing friends, Being overlooked. Vulnerability is: Accepting yourself first, Believing you are worthy, Celebrating growth opportunities. Letting down your guard, Embracing others.

4. Authenticity. Authenticity + Vulnerability: being who you are and allowing others to be who they are. Embrace your journey, engaging in honest dialogue, living with gratitude. Brands: focus on human factors, tell real stories and be humble.
Being vulnerable has vastly improved both my personal and professional life

Bonus word: Zeitgeist, the spirit of the times. Zeitgeist is the defining spirit or mood of a particual period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time. Tijdsgeest in Dutch. In a time when everyone is polarized, it is critical as marketers to tell stories at key moments that bring people together.

How to Harness the Cultural Zeitgeist: Hey Google campaign during the Oscars.

7 Photo tips how to increase website traffic

Add an image to bring your post to life.
LinkedIn is spot on. Using images will really help to create more brand awareness. October 2015 I was asked to be City Facebooker for two weeks for the local page of Dutch tourism board (VVV Breda). Being a photo specialist and a writer I kept posting photos about my walks, bike rides and much more. Showing the things I saw, that caught my eye. I combined cultural moments with 'just' outdoor autumn shots of my beautiful city.

Choose the right image
By choosing the right image I increased the actions of the 4500 community of the Gek op Breda (Crazy about Breda) page with an average of 85%, with 101% being the highest peak during my two week job. Over 21.000 actions, just by adding epic photos.

A good image is always intriguing, and makes people think, feel

How to get that traffic

1) Make sure you post a good epic photo! Low quality photos never contribute to your brand's name. Invest in buying the best images available.

2) An epic image will make people think, feel, love or hate it. It will draw attention.

3) Therefor: go easy with stock photos. Think twice before buying a (cheap) stock photo. The average price of a good quality stock photo is € 35,- Please keep in mind that when you hire a professional image maker (not necessarily a photographer, also other people with visionary occupations like graphic designers and journalists might be able to do the job) you often can buy photos for the same price.

4) No overkill. Go easy on photos. Twitter: max. 2, Facebook: max 9 (preferably 2, 3 or 4, depending on landscape, portrait or square size) per post. Less is still more.

5) If you really want to share more images, create an album or share an album link to your website. Make sure the album cover photo is an appealing one. This image will pop up when you share the link.

6) Use b&w (black & white) photos now and then. To stand out of the crowd a monochrome picture can really do the trick. This can also be an old historic photo of your brand or company.

7) Respect copyright. If you do not know if you can use that photo, make sure you find out. Always add the correct credits. When unsure, do not use the image.

SMEurope 2014 event Berlin

For me being in Berlin is very special. I never went here before, why not I am now asking myself. I was pleasantly suprised by its atmosphere. I knew there's a lot of things going on in Germany, e.g. that they do a very good job in EU and also their unity struck me. The pride they feel about being one Germany again since the wall fell in 1989, wow!

I was a student at the Graphic Design School Sint Lucas (1988-1992) at that time and now I am wondering, why didn't we do something with the fact that the wall fell? I remember the news on tv, but that's about it. Being an art & design school, we should've used this remarkable moment in German/European history.

When walking from Alexanderplatz (former East Berlin) to the Brandenburger Tor and the government building Bundestag I noticed a sign saying there's a multimedia show at the Bundestag each day this summer, until October 3. So I waited for it to get dark and watched it and I am very impressed about the recent German history. I know we need to learn about the Dutch history, but the Germans... man they do so well economic wise, they almost are the EU (in $ numbers) by itself. How come we do not teach Dutch kids about the German history more? Ofcourse mixed with Dutch history, but looking to the nearby future, I think Dutch kids should focus on Germany more than on e.g. USA or UK for that matter. Sorry Brits!

I am in favour of the Krauts now, and not just because of the great atmosphere of Berlin. Traveling to NYC two weeks ago made me hate the Big Apple. Hate, me??? I, who always wanted to live in NYC (for a while). Yes, me. I hate it. (and yes, there's a very thin line between love and hate)

It was noisy, dirty, and loud! How on earth can people live there and do not go mad. The noise of cars and trains... a true hell to me. Maybe this is because I am a highly sensitive person, but I noticed after a few visits the glorious feeling of being in NYC fades very fast. I do love NewYorkers, so it's just about the feeling you get by the noise when you walk through this amazing city with all its high buildings and more.

Landing in Berling I was struck by its... Europeaness (is that a word). I flew in at Tegel airport, which looked so very small. You see a lot of green (trees) and the East German flats. Then it hit me, O right, Berlin was divided after the war and this must be the East part. You feel the history when you touch down. Then getting into the airport, small, oldish, but there's also a more vibrant lower level with shops and a very helpful tourist information desk.

I had to take a bus to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and was told in English where to go for the next leg, two stops to the hotel by S-train. I used my secondary school German and was very surprised I could easily adapt to German, as being outside Germany speaking to a German I always toss with German and English words. So well done Berlin, I got back to my German 'roots'. As a child we lived in the Eastern part of the Netherlands, and before cable we could only watch 2 Dutch tv channels...and 3 German ones and 2 Belgium ones. So we watched Der Sendung mit der Maus, yes, in German.

My kids are missing out on this! Spoiled brats ;) Keywords of this Online Marketing, Mobile & Social Media in Travel summit Europe 2014: personalisation is the future. Engage guests, use their content. In the afternoon there were also a lot of presentations about apps in travel, but you have to ask yourself, if the average uses only books a holiday once, twice a week, why would he or she download the app? Even the KLM app has bugs still, when checking in I again use the mobile website instead of the app.

Can't wait to go out to explore some more of Berlin tomorrow. It's a city that is German, but also very Dutch/North-European. Or maybe the Germans are. As the city has a long history, going back ages. The Bundestag multi-media only showed the democratic part of German history, which was very interesting as well. Frein Wahl. Wir Sind Deutschland.

I immediately had to think, why doesn't Germany use this as a hashtag also outside football? #wirsinddeutschland All I've been listening to in New York's summit was that if you campaign a good # you can create a lot of traffic and brand awareness. Deutschland, your country is so worth it. You have green woods, hills, cities, Autobahnen, and very hard working people. They are so proud of Germany being one, it's almost sweet. It's appealing and gives you a feeling of joy.

The Millenials seem like the right people to me to do so. They also know the English language well, so as a country you should use that. Frau Merkel, bitte, use your people to present this new, modern Germany. We need to get rid of the old, rusty image of this beautiful country. I will be more than happily walking around in the city of Berlin tomorrow, taking in all its beauty and peace. In these days of age, we need mindfulness and peace. I think in Berlin you can experience that and still go to Starbucks ;)

No noise of trains and cars (no high-ways, I think that's the main problem in NYC, all the high train tracks and highways spreading their noise all over the city) Berlin is so old and new at the same time, I love that. (that also might be the missing part in NYC, as USA is the new world, nothing is really old-old) There's a lot of cranes in the centre at the moment, Berlin is one big building site as well, and it will become even more beautiful. Can't wait to be back!

City marketing

How my hometown Breda struggles with city marketing since 2009
Living in the Netherlands, I belong to one of the happiest people in the world. Our kids are even the happiest of the whole wide world. Amazing figures. And yes, we Dutchies in general feel very happy to live in a free country, in Western Europe, in between Germany, Belgium/France (Paris is only 2,5 hours away!) and UK.

I am proud to be Dutch. I wish I could say I am proud to be a Bredanaar too.

I live in the city of Breda, Noord-Brabant, or as we call it: Brabant. Brabant is a province, a small, state like region of the Netherlands. Brabant, in the South of the Netherlands, welcomes you. Antwerp (Belgium) is only 45 minutes by car.
Breda is also the home town of DJ Tiësto and Hardwell, really! Famous Bredanaars, but I guess you didn't know that?
DJ Hardwell & Tiesto: Ambassadors of Breda?

This wonderful, fabulous Dutch city in Brabant, is not getting the world wide attention it deserves. Due to lack of proper city marketing, we are not known to many tourists. Amsterdam is overcrowded by tourists, Breda is only a 55 minute train ride away from our capital Amsterdam.
Traditional Dutch culture (like the ancestors of the present king lived here, Breda is a 'Nassau' city) combined with modern life. Check out the old city centre and new architecture, theatre, music and a lot of pubs and heaps of cafe terraces. All in walking distance. You can take a boat tour or hire a bike and cycle through the city via our wonderful bike paths. We have beautiful nature like the Markdal and Mastbos, and much more.

So with all the above and so much more, why isn't Breda 'on the map'??

Until 2010 we had a city marketing project called Expeditie Breda. In Breda we like to use the term expeditie (expedition) e.g. Expeditie Belcrum en de Linie. Breda has many more cultural platforms like Culture Shop Breda. This website is for cultural education mostly. There's an annual Culture Night and Redhead Days, next to the many music events like Jazz Breda or Breda Live. Breda wants to be a city of events.
Well, we got that one covered quite well. Breda has 175.000 inhabitants, the Netherlands 16,8 million. People from Brabant and beyond are visiting all our festivals, like Breda Barst, our free pop festival, and the more commercial ones 538 and Breda Live. (both sold out) We are the city of (dance) music!?

City marketing in the making
Breda wants to be the city of events. Breda wants to be the city of image culture. What else?

Breda Next made an adviesrapport about city marketing in 2014. Sorry, in Dutch only I went through all the themes. From the biggest annoyance (the vacancy of many business and shop properties) to the (lack of or wrong) ambition.
The answer to draw more attention the Breda was, and still is, in my eyes, simple: better social media marketing. Breda is not using all of its potentential. Like Why is Amsterdam mentioned in an Australian news item about our redhead days?
City of Imagineers is wants to be a union of visual and culturtal artists and other platforms. CultuurBreda (Breda Culture) tries to connect quartermasters with the Bredanaars:

Why do we need an extra platform (CultuurBreda), with City of Imagineers being able to do all of the above? City of imagineers has such great potential. Sir Ken Robinson at TedX Oklahoma, State of Creativity:
'Did you just say Imagineers?....That's awesome!'

And another great talk of this man: 'How schools kills creativity.'

Kunstkameraden, 2014 - kids made their own art coached by local artists
"Imagination is the art within you. If you let your imagination take off, you will feel free."

City making
BredaNext picked 3 terms to describe our city center, Historisch (Historic), Bourgondisch (Burgundian) and Creatief (Creative). Boring!... Let's think about this like a true marketeer and then I came up with this:
Breda is Culture, Food & Imagination .
Culture (instead of History), Culture can be both old and new Breda,
Food, 'Dutch Food' or perhaps 'Organic (or true?) Brabant Food' (instead of Burgundic)
Imagination (instead of Creative) involving all art, including music!

According to the Breda profile
'we need to start up a tourism & citymarketing organisation again'

YES, please do so. Let's make Breda a tourist hotspot with Culture, Food & Imagination!

Manifest Breda
