The Artist

You're 'The Artist'

You live to be immersed in your art.

As 'The Artist', you live for the moments when you are wholly immersed in your art. The moments when you can create, develop, and explore without restrictions or limitations.

You rebel against “standard” shots; instead, you are driven by the intensity of human emotions at their most raw. Where words fall short, your work conveys what it was like to be truly immersed in the emotions of your clients.

As 'The Artist', you operate on the fundamental mantra that better art means more success. Your biggest challenge has always been promoting your work to a broader audience. Those who know you recognize your talent, but you struggle to reach beyond this to book new clients.

It’s crucial for the ongoing success of your art that your business is able to flourish as well. This doesn’t mean becoming a hard-headed business person—find ways of promoting your work, that are in sync with your creative process.

Spirits in the Forest

Pathé Breda #PuurZien in de zaal

 Dave Gahan:

“It’s amazing to see the very real ways that music has impacted the lives of our fans.”

SPiRiTS IN THE FOREST
Without any knowledge of the content of the film I just watched Spirits in the Forest in Breda, my hometown, together with our youngest son Pim (17). The mix of die hard fan interviews and sneak peaks of their lives combined with the live footage of the last Global Spirit concert, Berlin 2018, make this film an interesting one.

Depeche Mode (DM) was one of the many 80's bands I listened to when in secondary (high) school. I just can't get enough is still a great song, performed live even better, less clean and more raw. Later in life, when studying fine art photography, I listened to 101 Live when working all those hours in the dark room. That cassette tape is completely worn, o man, I love that album still.

DM is a band that keeps surprising you. Where other bands are 'old men get of the stage' like (right, Morrissey ;) DM's music is timeless. Listening to the music, seeing Dave and Martin perform on stage ... fascinating. O yes, they have aged, but haven't we all?

It's great to see Dave having so much fun, and although the fans' stories, as well as their own - tho not really mentioned in this movie - are sometimes bigger than life, they are still here, alive and kicking.

Our son loves 80's music "real music, mum" and happily tagged along. Next to us we spot another Breda photographer with his daughter. Hmm, are we all setting an example with our teenage kids ;) I recommend to take your teenager with you, they will thank you later.
It made ours think of how he relates to his favourite musicians and bands. How he got to know their music, as this is something Anton (Corbijn) points out in the fans' stories; how they 'met' DM and braided their music into their lives.

SPOILER ALERT
DMK was sweet, and the Mongolian girl is to die for. I was intrigued by the French lady's story, that she only could remember DM music after a coma and complete loss of memory. Because of my current NLP practitioner training I am wondering about her body and senses, did her cells really not remember?!?

Funniest part was the interview of the Romanian fan, talking about his adventure in the local mountains, taking his brother and a friend dressed up as king, to shoot Enjoy the Silence like photos. My friend Mariska and I re-discovered this timeless song in 2003, at Anton's big solo exhitibion where the video was playing.

I also love the Berlin connection of DM, seeing the movie made me realise that at the time I wasn't really aware of the importance of The Wall being torn. U2 went to Berlin early 90's - Achtung Baby and Zooropa if I am correct - and so did DM. It really is their favourite Europe town.
I did not see Berlin with my own eyes until a few years ago, was a late Prague visitor as well. I now know the stories of friends who went there right after the fall of communism, when everything still had that pure, weird communist feeling. I am not jealous though, it just wasn't my time.

Groninger Museum - Barbara, Mariska & Me, 2003

THANK YOU ANTON
Without internet we just didn't know (that) much I reckon. I was studing graphic design and photography, and in 1996 I started my own photography business. Like many artists I was always doubting my qualities, when I watched a documentary on famous Dutch photographer Paul Huf. The documentary had Anton Corbijn and another photographer create a typical portrait of Huf.

Anton made Mr. Huf stand in front of a KLM aeroplane at Schiphol Amsterdam airport, taking his portrait shoulders up from a deep low, knee down position, wide angle and kinda eerie with the nose of the plane hanging over Mr. Huf as a big, dark shape. My kind of portrait! Since that moment I never doubt my quality as professional photographer again, knowing I am as great as he is, creating beautiful compositions and fab 'Eyespiration' portraits.

I saw Anton moving around with his camera on stage at the 2006 Rotterdam concert. Front row, the best live experience ever. Nothing beats seeing DM live. The Spirits in the Forest footage of the band playing are wonderful 'live photos', moving stills with great composition. I like these reflection kind of photos/footage, like the one below. Contemplation.

Thanks DM, Anton, and you, for reading this story. The film made me think of my personal life end of the '80s, early '90s and made me realise I am always looking to the future, whatever happens.

My mom died 1991, still I am here. Alive & kicking. Let's Focus on the Beauty of Life, only.

GCCA Winner

Instagram post with my shortlist photo of Grand Hotel Neum
#ConcreteinLife GCCA shortlist 2019
So wonderful to see my photo on display at the exhibition of the GCCA annual 'Concrete in Life' conference on concrete in Singapore last month. Too funny the man is looking at my photo of Grand Hotel Neum :)

Thank you GCCA!

Winning photo by Rolando Batacon
Winning photo shows one section of the pedestrian bridge located near AI Aweer Vegetable and Fruit Market in Dubai. The concrete bridge traverses the busy Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road and is used by Asian expats mostly working as portrers in the vegetable and fruit market.

Imitating life's cycle, these workers cross this bridge everyday in the morning and back in the evening after back-breaking work. It was designed for ease of access enabling bicycles to easily cross the bridge.

Shortlist GCCA Concrete in Life Competition

Concrete in Life 2019 Shortlist - top 9 out of 5000 entries - © Melanie E. Rijkers #Eyespiration Fotowedstrijd shortlist - bij laatste 9 uit 5000 inzendingen - #PuurZien in Bosnië Herzegovina voormalig Kroatië

This fabulous photo of Grand Hotel Neum's concrete gateway to the beach in Neum, Bosnia Herzegovina made the shortlist of the GCCA's Concrete in Life photo competition 2019.

10 October the winners will be announced, fingers crossed!

When we booked our trip to Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina last summer we did not know much about the countries. Our students in photography said "you should go there, it is so beautiful" over and over again.

Croatia and Bosnia did surprise us in many ways.

From the busy cities to the fabulous national parks, OMG all over. One of the best moments was when we arrived in Grand Hotel Neum in Bosnia. We were told there was a tunnel to the sea side, as we wanted to take a walk like we do every evening.

For some reason we took the stairs.

Summer holiday storytelling with #Eyespiration Bosnia Herzegovina
10 floors down to the beach, Grand Hotel Neum © Melanie E. Rijkers
We walked 10 floors down, and back up again as well, we missed the lifts that first time. Lights that automaticly switch on when you descent from floor to floor, silence, moist air, passing an occasional puddle of water and some white outdoor chairs.

We finally made it, wondering if it was really okay to go there, not seeing any other people at that time. After two turns and by accessing a big, steel door we entered the tunnel. Apperently the hotel once was a hospital, built on a hill side.

The way down, this deep tunnel to the beach felt like a movie adventure. Exploration and discovery, safe but yet exciting. Admiration because of the old structure of the tunnel, still safe and in one piece.

Admiring the builders, for creating such a wonderful walkway even though its original use most likely wasn't as jolly. Respect to all who design, create and inspire to make the world a better place.

#SMWNYC

STORIES: With Great Influence Comes Great Responsibility. Ultimately, stories have the power to influence the world and the people who consume them, and with this influence comes responsibility.

www.MelanieRijkers.com on Social Media Week New York City

1. Stories: Social media has become the world’s most influential storytelling platform. The stories we tell have the ability to touch and inspire, and shake people to their cores. They can elevate people, educate them, and change them—or, they can divide us and tear us down.

The number of social media users worldwide in 2018 is 3.2 billion, up 13 percent year-on-year. By 2020 almost 5 billion people will be connected. Social Media Week (SMW) is one of the world’s premier conferences and industry news platforms for professionals in media, marketing and technology.

2. Vulnerability. Brands now must encourage vulnerability, not to isolate consumers, but to celebrate their differences — engaging focused communities, sharing insightful, relevant content, and allowing passionate people to connect with one another.
What's your P.O.V? (Power of Vulnerability)

Tips taken from the session with Amy Emmerich/Refinery29: To Service – not sell – to your audience. Keywords: Celebrate, Strenght, Connection, Joy. What is the solution you offer to your customer's problem? Claim your Power, the Power of Vulnerability.

3. Connection. Vulnerability: how true connection is formed. Brands: use connection over perfection. Many speakers mentioned connection, but Lola Banjo explains it perfectly, fear is the emotion that prevents true vulnerability.

www.MelanieRijkers.com on Social Media Week New York City

Vulnerability: how true connection is formed

Lola - I froze my eggs - Banjo: The Fear of Being judged, Lola talked about Not being relevant, Losing friends, Being overlooked. Vulnerability is: Accepting yourself first, Believing you are worthy, Celebrating growth opportunities. Letting down your guard, Embracing others.

4. Authenticity. Authenticity + Vulnerability: being who you are and allowing others to be who they are. Embrace your journey, engaging in honest dialogue, living with gratitude. Brands: focus on human factors, tell real stories and be humble.
Being vulnerable has vastly improved both my personal and professional life

Bonus word: Zeitgeist, the spirit of the times. Zeitgeist is the defining spirit or mood of a particual period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time. Tijdsgeest in Dutch. In a time when everyone is polarized, it is critical as marketers to tell stories at key moments that bring people together.

How to Harness the Cultural Zeitgeist: Hey Google campaign during the Oscars.

More zeitgeist: since its founding in 2006, charity: water has raised over $300M to bring clean drinking water to more than 9.5 million people around the globe. Renowned for its 100% donation model, bold storytelling, imaginative branding, and radical commitment to transparency.

Calm

When I was a young woman, thinking of my next step after secondary (high) school, anxienty hit me like a brick.

Letter to my 16-24 yo self

Fear of the Future

I did not even call it fear. This undefined feeling of unwellness emerged in tenth/eleventh grade. As young girls we were told to 'study hard, study even more, then go to uni, get a job, then work work work, and maybe, at the end of the line, you can become a mother.'

Ofcourse it wasn't said in these exact words. However, this does describe the general feeling my best friends and I experienced the rest of our lives: the fear of not being good enough. The fear of not being the woman I should be.

The restlessness of never being perfect or let alone just being good enough... this fear was here to stay. That little voice nagging I was indeed a failure... It took me until I was in my forties (!) to finally realise it wasn't society holding me back, it was ME.

I listened to that little voice. I listened to, and valued, general opinion over my own. I listened. Now listen to this:

Dear me,

where you are today, is exactly the place where you should be. The way you look today is the most beautiful you will ever be. The decisions you make today are the best you will ever make, as long as these are made with a pure heart.

My sweet self, you are perfect. Whenever you are unsure, take a deep breath. Inhale: receive oxygen and energy. Exhale: release bad thoughts and anxiety. Repeat.

Perfection is being kind. Kind to self, kind to others. The only person who knows what's best for you is ... YOU. Follow your energy, follow your effort. If you feel it's worthwile to do so, IT IS. Truly ask yourself:
is this good for me?

Lots of (Self)Love, yours truly,
Melanie, 47.

Weather alert in SF

Every year in February I attend the San Francisco Writers Conference. Never before it was this wet. An occasional shower or one wet day of the week I am in SF, that's all. Not this year. This year the weather forecast show rain, more rain and ... rain.

Daily temp below average and even on Thursday it rained all day. Tho temps weren't as cold as the forecast predicted (14C and up) it still was cooler than previous years, where I often could warm myself in the sun during the day.

In San Francisco evening and night can be cooler always, when the fog comes in. During rainy days tho it's not that cold at night, al least it wasn't in 2019 ;)

On the news a Microclimate Weather Alert: floods caused by the rain and it even snowed in Las Vegas.

Right. Climate change anyone?

Inspiring

Lucky for me wet streets are also very inspiring. I like to walk down the street early morning. It took me 30 mins to walk to the conference hotel, and Market St. truly was a beauty in the rain.

Since my first cruise to Alaska I am hooked on cruising. How I love this way of travel! To have a fabulous holiday and attend a seminar at sea at the same time is the ultimate way to travel onboard a cruise ship: you can write it off.
